Statement by the Prime Minister on Vietnamese New Year

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the Vietnamese New Year:
“This week, Vietnamese communities in Canada and around the world will celebrate Tết Nguyên Đán, the Lunar New Year.
“Tết is a time to give thanks for the successes of the past year and look forward with optimism to the arrival of spring. Friends and family will join together to welcome the Year of the Dog, share a special meal, and wish each other prosperity and good luck for the year to come.
“In Canada, Tết is also a chance to celebrate the contributions of the Vietnamese Canadian community. For generations, Vietnamese Canadians have helped make our country stronger, more inclusive, and more prosperous. As we move forward together in 2018, let’s continue to celebrate everything that unites us, and the diversity that makes us strong.
“On behalf of our family, Sophie and I wish peace, prosperity, and good health to all those celebrating Tết.

Statement by the Prime Minister on Korea’s Lunar New Year

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement for Korea’s Lunar New Year:
“Today, Korean communities in Canada and around the world will celebrate Seollal, Korea’s Lunar New Year, and welcome the Year of the Dog.
“Seollal is one of the most important traditional Korean holidays and usually falls on the second new moon after the Winter Solstice. It is a time for friends and family to come together in a spirit of celebration, renewal, and hope for the future. During this three-day holiday, loved ones will share Korean delicacies, like tteokguk (떡국), a rice cake soup, or jeon (전), savoury pancakes made of seafood, meat, or vegetables.
“This year, Seollal has special significance for the people of South Korea, as they welcome the world during the 2018 Olympic Winter Games. In Canada, Korea’s Lunar New Year is also a chance to celebrate the many contributions of the Korean Canadian community. Korean Canadians have made our country stronger, more inclusive, and more prosperous for generations. As we move forward together in 2018, let’s continue to celebrate everything that unites us, and the diversity that makes us strong.

“This week, Chinese communities in Canada and around the world will celebrate the Lunar New Year.
“The Chinese Lunar New Year takes place on the first day of the first month in the Lunar calendar, and is a time to look forward to the year ahead with hope and optimism. Families and loved ones will come together to give thanks for the blessings of the past year, exchange gifts, and welcome the arrival of the Year of the Dog – a symbol of honesty, hard work, and determination.
“In 2018, we also mark the Canada-China Year of Tourism – a chance to celebrate the many contributions of the Chinese-Canadian community. Each day, Chinese Canadians make communities across our country stronger, more inclusive, and more prosperous. As we move forward together in 2018, let’s continue to celebrate everything that unites us, and the diversity that makes us strong.
