Statement by the Prime Minister on Earth Day

April 22, 2018
Ottawa, Ontario

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Earth Day:
“Today, we join the international community to celebrate Earth Day – a time to cherish and enjoy the nature all around us, while embracing our shared responsibility to leave a cleaner, healthier Earth for generations to come.
“From the Great Bear Rainforest to the Atlantic Coast to the vast and beautiful North, Canada is defined by its natural landscapes. We are blessed with soaring peaks, boundless prairies, and an endless patchwork of hills, lakes, forests, and rivers. Our geography has shaped much of our history, and our future depends on careful stewardship of the land we all call home.
“Climate change is the greatest global challenge of our time. Canada stands with countries around the world in the fight against climate change, and is taking real, concrete action to reduce emissions, transition to a low-carbon economy, and protect the clean air and water we share.
“In Budget 2018, we made one of the most significant investments in nature conservation in Canadian history. These funds will go a long way to help protect Canada’s ecosystems, landscapes, and biodiversity for future generations.
“We also recently endorsed the Commonwealth Blue Charter – a call for ambitious, coordinated action to promote the sustainable use of coastal and ocean resources, and protect and preserve our world’s oceans. Canada is already playing a leading role on oceans protection through the Oceans Protection Plan, which makes our ocean conservation and marine safety work some of the best in the world.
“Our momentum will not be stopped. We will continue to honour our Paris Agreement commitments, and help other countries do the same. Working together on climate change, oceans, and clean energy is one of the key themes of our G7 presidency. The fight against climate change must happen at an international level, because the consequences of inaction know no borders.
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, I encourage all Canadians to take time today to do their part for the environment. Together and only together, can we protect the clean air and water we share, and pass a planet on to our kids and grandkids that is better than how we found it.”

April 20, 2018
London, United Kingdom

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today concluded his visit to London, United Kingdom (UK), where he attended the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), and promoted progressive trade that creates economic growth for all, addressed climate change and ocean protection, and emphasized the importance of values like gender equality, inclusion, and respect for diversity.
During his visit, Prime Minister Trudeau met with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Theresa May, to grow the already strong economic and trade partnership between our two countries. The two leaders restated their commitment to a seamless transition on free trade as the UK exits the European Union.
They later participated in a security meeting, alongside the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern, and the Prime Minister of Australia, Malcolm Turnbull, to discuss pressing international issues, including cybersecurity, the situation in Syria, and how we work together to keep our countries and communities safe.
While in London, the Prime Minister was received by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace, where he thanked her personally for her continued dedication and service to Canada.
At an event hosted by the Mayor of London, Sadiq Aman Khan, and the Fawcett Society, Prime Minister Trudeau joined Mayor Khan, Prime Minister Ardern, and young people from across London to mark the 100th anniversary since the first women received the right to vote in the UK, and discuss the importance of gender equality.
At CHOGM, the Prime Minister underlined Canada’s commitment to address climate change, protect our oceans, and deliver economic growth that creates jobs and benefits everyone. He also reiterated the need to strengthen the Commonwealth’s role in protecting and promoting universal values of democracy, human rights – including LGBTQ2 rights – and the rule of law.
Commonwealth leaders endorsed the Commonwealth Blue Charter, which calls for ambitious and coordinated action to promote the sustainable use of coastal and ocean resources, and protect and preserve our world’s oceans. The Prime Minister announced that Canada will become a Commonwealth Blue Charter Champion on oceans observation, a fitting role as oceans protection is a key theme of Canada’s G7 Presidency.
On the margins of CHOGM, Canada committed to further support other Commonwealth nations to advance human rights and improve the lives of LGBTQ2 people. Canada will provide more than $300,000 to help Commonwealth small states more actively participate in multilateral human rights organizations, such as the United Nations Human Rights Council.
The Prime Minister also hosted a roundtable discussion with leaders of Commonwealth small islands and coastal states. Canada committed to provide $3.35 million to promote economic and political participation for women in the Pacific Islands, and increase women’s presence in disaster preparedness and the fight against climate change.
Finally, the Prime Minister held bilateral meetings with other Commonwealth leaders, including Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda, Uhuru Kenyatta, President of Kenya, Filipe Nyusi, President of Mozambique, and Cyril Ramaphosa, President of South Africa, to further strengthen Canada’s relationship with African nations.

We will continue to set the stage for an even closer economic partnership, and create greater opportunities for citizens of Canada and the UK alike.”
The Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada
“CHOGM is a unique and valuable forum that brings leaders from every corner of the globe together. I thank my Commonwealth counterparts for the productive discussions over the last few days. Working together, we can play an important role in addressing the most pressing challenges of our time – like fighting climate change, eradicating poverty, and building a truly gender equal world.”
The Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada

G7 Leaders’ Statement on Syria

April 16, 2018
Ottawa, Ontario

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, joined G7 Leaders today to issue the following statement on Syria:
“We, the G7 Leaders of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States of America and the European Union, are united in condemning, in the strongest possible terms, the use of chemical weapons in the April 7 attack in Eastern Ghouta, Syria.
“We fully support all efforts made by the United States, the United Kingdom and France to degrade the Assad regime’s ability to use chemical weapons and to deter any future use, demonstrated by their action taken on April 13. This response was limited, proportionate and necessary – and taken only after exhausting every possible diplomatic option to uphold the international norm against the use of chemical weapons.
“Use of chemical weapons is a breach of the Chemical Weapons Convention and constitutes a threat to international peace and security. The repeated and morally reprehensible use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime in the past has been confirmed by independent international investigators. We condemn this deliberate strategy of terrorizing local populations and forcing them into submission. Syria’s possession of chemical weapons and their means of delivery are illegal under UN Security Council Resolution 2118 and the Chemical Weapons Convention. We stand together against impunity for those who develop or use these weapons, anywhere, anytime, under any circumstances.
“We remain committed to a diplomatic solution to the conflict in Syria. We commend and support UN Special Envoy de Mistura’s efforts towards an inclusive and credible political transition in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254 and the Geneva Communiqué.”

Together, the two leaders announced that, as of today, France and Canada commit to increase their cooperation against climate change, through the France-Canada Partnership on climate and the environment. In order to deepen the close relationship between the two countries with regards to culture, Prime Minister Trudeau and President Macron also announced a new cultural initiative aimed at promoting cultural expression, diversity and the French language in the digital space. This initiative will also enable the two countries to enhance their collaboration within the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Together, they discussed ways to promote economic growth that benefits everyone, a theme that will be at the forefront of the upcoming G7 summit in Charlevoix.
The Prime Minister also met with representatives from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, UNESCO and the International Organization of La Francophonie, to strengthen Canada’s relationships with these important multilateral organizations.
Tomorrow, the Prime Minister will meet with Édouard Philippe, Prime Minister of France, Gérard Larcher, President of France’s Senate, and François de Rugy, President of the French Assemblée Nationale, before addressing the Assemblée Nationale. Statement by the Prime Minister on Yom HaShoah

April 11, 2018
Ottawa, Ontario

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Memorial Day):
“Beginning at sundown tonight, Jewish communities and others in Canada and around the world will observe Yom HaShoah – Holocaust Memorial Day – to honour the lives of the six million Jews who were systematically murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust.
“Yom HaShoah reminds us of our eternal responsibility to preserve the memories of those we lost, share the stories of survivors, and keep alive the bitter lessons of the Holocaust.
“Tonight and tomorrow, friends and families will gather to recite prayers and light memorial candles. On the streets of Israel, sirens will sound as an entire nation pauses to remember, while the Mourner’s Kaddish will echo through synagogues around the world.
“These moments of reflection and remembrance are vital. We cannot let the horrors of the Holocaust fade, and forget the dangers of anti-Semitism, indifference, and silence. Every generation must know what happened, and restate the values we hold dear, to bring meaning to the solemn vow, ‘Never again.’
“These are not just words but a call to action: A call to always speak out against racism, hate, and bigotry in all its forms. And to stand on guard against a resurgence of anti-Semitism, xenophobia, and prejudice.
“On behalf of Sophie and our family, I extend my thoughts and prayers to all those observing Yom HaShoah.”

Statement by the Prime Minister on Vimy Ridge Day

April 9, 2018
Ottawa, Ontario

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on Vimy Ridge Day:
“On this day, 101 years ago, the four divisions of the Canadian Corps fought for the first time together. They came from all corners of Canada – Francophones, Anglophones, new Canadians, and Indigenous Peoples. In the early hours of April 9, they united as one, achieved what no Allied army had done – and defined a country.
“Years of war had battered and transformed Vimy Ridge – once a gentle rise in the French countryside – into a formidable maze of enemy bunkers, trenches, and gun batteries. For three days, Canadian soldiers battled uphill, braving a sleet storm, constant shelling, and withering machine gun fire. They did not stop until they had victory.
“The capture of Vimy Ridge was one of the Great War’s most decisive victories, but success came at a steep cost. Nearly 3,600 Canadians lost their lives and over 7,000 more were wounded.
“Over the course of those three days, the Canadians proved themselves as an elite force. They also helped pioneer new fighting techniques that would contribute to the final Allied victory a year and a half later.
“On this day, we honour the great courage and sacrifice of those who fought at Vimy Ridge, and pay tribute to every Canadian who has answered the call to serve. Our men and women in uniform have given so much. They have our unwavering respect and gratitude.
“Lest we forget.”

“Today, we join people of Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and Eastern Catholic faith in Canada and around the world to celebrate Easter.
“Also known as Pascha, Easter is the holiest of holidays in the Orthodox Christian faith. It commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and is a time to celebrate the triumph of life over death, and light over darkness.
“To celebrate, families and loved ones will join together to exchange greetings, share festive meals, sing, and attend Easter Mass.
“Easter is also an opportunity to give thanks for the blessings we enjoy in life. For all of us, this holiday is a chance to reflect on how we can make a difference in the lives of others, and show compassion to those in need in our community and around the world.

Statement by the Prime Minister on World Health Day

April 7, 2018
Ottawa, Ontario
The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on World Health Day:
“Today, as we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization, we recommit ourselves to a world where everyone has access to the health care they need.
“The theme for this year’s World Health Day – Universal health coverage: everyone, everywhere – reminds us of the importance of health care that leaves no behind.
“In Canada, Medicare is a source of pride and, more importantly, a system we can all count on, without risk or fear of financial hardship. But for almost half of the world’s population, universal health care coverage remains a distant reality. Every day, countless people must make the choice to pay for health care or go without. Too many people simply have no access to essential health services at all.
“At home, we are working with provinces and territories to improve the accessibility and affordability of prescription medications. As part of Budget 2018, we created an Advisory Council on the Implementation of National Pharmacare to recommend options on how to move forward on this important project. Budget 2018 also pledges over $1.5 billion over five years to help close the gaps in the health outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.

“Easter celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is a time of renewal, and a chance to appreciate the present – whether by going to church, watching kids hunt for Easter eggs, or coming together around the table.
“On this occasion, we also take time to reflect on the Easter message of love and hope. The story of the resurrection embodies the meaning of compassion. It challenges us to put into practice what it means to love our neighbours as ourselves – not just today, but every day.
“For our family, Easter is a chance to celebrate along with Christians across the country. Christians have made foundational contributions to Canada, and Christian Canadians of all backgrounds continue to shape our country’s future for the better.
“On behalf of our family, Sophie and I wish joy and renewal to all those celebrating Easter.”

Statement by the Prime Minister on Passover

March 30, 2018
Ottawa, Ontario
The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the occasion of Passover:
“Tonight at sundown, Jewish communities in Canada and around the world will celebrate the beginning of Passover.
“Over the next eight days, families and loved ones will gather around the Seder table to share festive meals and wine, read from the Haggadah, and recite the four questions in celebration of freedom.
“Passover commemorates the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. It celebrates the power of faith, the triumph of freedom over bondage, and the enduring strength of the Jewish people.
“For all of us, the Passover story is a call to action. The story of the Israelites reminds us that with courage and determination, each one of us has the power to be a voice for justice and a force for freedom.
“On Passover, we also celebrate Canada’s Jewish community and the significant contributions Jewish Canadians make to our country. Today, we reaffirm our commitment to stand against anti-Semitism, oppression, and hatred in all its forms – and to work to build a better world for all.
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, Sophie and I wish health, joy, and happiness to everyone marking Passover.
“Chag Pesach Sameach!”

Inuit-Crown Partnership Committee makes progress on shared priorities

March 29, 2018
Ottawa, Ontario
The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today participated in the Inuit-Crown Partnership Committee meeting to review progress made since the Committee was formed last year and to discuss what actions need to be taken to advance our shared commitment to reconciliation.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister and Inuit leaders reflected on the important progress made to strengthen the Inuit-Crown relationship and to address key social, economic, cultural, and environmental issues together. These accomplishments include:
  • Long-term funding to support housing in Nunavut and an Inuit-led housing plan in the Inuit regions of Nunavik, Nunatsiavut, and Inuvialuit Settlement Region.
  • A commitment to eliminate tuberculosis across Inuit Nunangat by 2030, and to reduce active tuberculosis by at least 50 per cent by 2025.
  • Progress on an Inuit early learning and child care framework, which would reflect the distinct needs and priorities of Inuit children and families.
  • Progress toward a new Arctic Policy Framework, including infrastructure and related needs, which will ensure that Inuit Nunangat residents and governments are at the forefront of decisions about the future of their region.
The leaders discussed how to build on the momentum of the past year to further advance important priorities and policies. The Committee agreed to keep working on the seven priorities established last year and to add environment and climate change as a new one. The focus of this new priority will be on Indigenous protected and conserved areas, the Indigenous Guardians Program, and taking action on climate change. The leaders also acknowledged that the full implementation of the Inuit-Crown land claims agreements and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples are key components to reconciliation. In addition, the leaders committed to continue to advance language rights for Inuit as another fundamental component of reconciliation.
The work of the Inuit-Crown Partnership Committee is a reflection of our shared commitment to a renewed Inuit-Crown relationship and to reconciliation based on recognition and respect for Inuit as first Canadians, Canadians first.

Quotes

“Today’s meeting with Inuit leaders was productive and encouraging. Important work has been done over the past year to find innovative and meaningful solutions to the distinct issues faced by Inuit. Together, we can bring about the type of transformative change that we need to make a real difference for Inuit, for the benefit of all Canadians.”
The Rt. Hon. Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada
“The Inuit-Crown Partnership Committee brings Inuit leadership and the Government of Canada together to act on shared priority areas that will improve the lives of Inuit. We have made good progress in our first year and will continue to build on and improve this partnership committee to best advance Inuit rights and create a better Canada overall.”
President Natan Obed, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami
