April 8, 2018Ottawa, Ontario
The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the occasion of Orthodox Easter:
“Today, we join people of Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, and Eastern Catholic faith in Canada and around the world to celebrate Easter.
“Also known as Pascha, Easter is the holiest of holidays in the Orthodox Christian faith. It commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and is a time to celebrate the triumph of life over death, and light over darkness.
“To celebrate, families and loved ones will join together to exchange greetings, share festive meals, sing, and attend Easter Mass.
“Easter is also an opportunity to give thanks for the blessings we enjoy in life. For all of us, this holiday is a chance to reflect on how we can make a difference in the lives of others, and show compassion to those in need in our community and around the world.
“On behalf of our family, Sophie and I wish all those celebrating an Easter filled with renewal, hope, and peace.”
Statement by the Prime Minister on World Health Day
April 7, 2018
Ottawa, Ontario
The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on World Health Day:
“Today, as we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization, we recommit ourselves to a world where everyone has access to the health care they need.
“The theme for this year’s
World Health Day –
Universal health coverage: everyone, everywhere – reminds us of the importance of health care that leaves no behind.
“In Canada, Medicare is a source of pride and, more importantly, a system we can all count on, without risk or fear of financial hardship. But for almost half of the world’s population, universal health care coverage remains a distant reality. Every day, countless people must make the choice to pay for health care or go without. Too many people simply have no access to essential health services at all.
“At home, we are working with provinces and territories to improve the accessibility and affordability of prescription medications. As part of Budget 2018, we created an Advisory Council on the Implementation of National Pharmacare to recommend options on how to move forward on this important project. Budget 2018 also pledges over $1.5 billion over five years to help close the gaps in the health outcomes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people.
“In support of better health outcomes around the world, we adopted the United Nations’
2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which aims to create a healthier, safer, and more prosperous world by the year 2030. Budget 2018 reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to achieve these goals, and provided targeted funding of $109.2 million over 13 years to support their implementation. In addition, Budget 2018 provided new support to the International Assistance Envelope, which will strengthen Canada’s ability to deliver on the Feminist International Assistance Policy and help close persistent health gaps for women and girls. We believe that everyone should have access to quality health care, proper nutrition, and education, regardless of gender.
“Everyone – no matter where they live – should have access to essential health services. Canada will continue to work with our domestic and international partners to promote health care that is high quality, affordable, and available to all.”
Statement by the Prime Minister on the tragic bus crash in Saskatchewan
April 7, 2018
Ottawa, Ontario
The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the tragic bus crash that took place in Saskatchewan on Friday evening:
“An entire country is in shock and mourning today as we learn more about the tragic bus crash involving the Humboldt Broncos that claimed the lives of 14 people, and injured many more.
“We are heartbroken knowing many of those we lost had their entire lives in front of them. We grieve with those facing news no parent or family should ever have to face. And our hearts go out to the community that has lost teammates, coaches, friends, and mentors.
“This is every parent’s worst nightmare. No one should ever have to see their child leave to play the sport they love and never come back.
“Our national hockey family is a close one, with roots in almost every town – small and big – across Canada. Humboldt is no exception, and today the country and the entire hockey community stands with you.
“I thank the first responders – the RCMP, the Provincial Response Team, and medical personnel – who worked tirelessly through the night, and continue to respond to this incredibly difficult situation with courage and professionalism.
“To the entire Humboldt community: We are here for you. As neighbours, as friends, and as Canadians, we grieve alongside you.”
