The need for more sustainable diets
The population on Earth is expected to grow to over 9 billion people by 2050 and with that comes an increased demand for food. In the world’s more developed regions, many of us consume more food than we need, and many diets are rich in animal-based products, resulting in negative impacts on the environment.
To be able to provide enough food for future generations, while minimising our environmental impact, we must switch to more sustainable food production and change our dietary patterns. But what changes do we need to make to achieve this vision?

Tips for eating more sustainably
Our daily food choices, however small they may seem, not only have an impact on our health, but also on the planet. We can all help make the world a healthier place to live by making small changes such as consuming less, wasting less, and switching to a more plant-based diet.

Technology’s role in food sustainability
New food technologies like cultured meat, 3D printing and gene editing techniques have given us increasingly efficient options to improve the sustainability of food production. In the face of population growth, these technologies may provide real opportunities to secure high quality global food supplies, and could also provide much-needed tools for reducing negative environmental impacts of the food industry in the coming decades.

Protein alternatives to meat
Animal farming is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and therefore, climate change. Reducing the amount of animal products we eat (particularly beef) with more sustainable protein sources (e.g. algae, insects, rapeseed, and legumes), and increasing the efficiency of agricultural practices are important for the future of food. The challenge will be to encourage people to be adventurous in their food choices, and motivate change in meat-eating habits.
