Top news European Commission hosts the first ever European Education Summit The first European Education summit, hosted by Commissioner Tibor Navracsics, brought together on the 25th of January, in Brussels, 20 education ministers and 600 education experts, professionals and stakeholders from all over Europe to reflect on how to build a European Education Area where young people receive the best education and training, can study and train across the continent, and which promotes Europe’s common values and cultural diversity. Drawing inspiration from the summit discussions, the European Commission will be presenting new initiatives this spring and will be hosting the second Education Summit in 2019. New education initiatives for more inclusive, cohesive and competitive European societies Taking forward the vision on Strengthening European identity through education and culture it outlined at the meeting of European Leaders in Gothenburg in November 2017, the European Commission put forward three key initiatives on the 17th of January 2018:a proposal for a Council Recommendation on key competences for lifelong learning, an Action Plan for digital education and a proposal for a Council Recommendation on common values, inclusive education and the European dimension of teaching. News Erasmus+ evaluated as one of the most positive EU results According to its mid-term evaluation, Europeans see the Erasmus+ programme as one of the most positive results of EU integration. The programme was also found to be highly beneficial for the participants, not only in terms of supporting their transition to employment, but also by creating a feeling of being an EU citizen. The evaluation also includes recommendations for improving the successor programme to Erasmus+. Read more... Ideas from young people for Europe At the closing event of the New Narrative for Europe initiative on 31 January 2018, Commissioner Tibor Navracsics received young people to discuss their views on the future of Europe. Their ideas resonate with a recent Eurobarometer survey which explored questions about youth, young people's participation in social and civic life, and youth involvement in voluntary activities. Funding for projects on active citizenship and historical awareness The 'Europe for Citizens' programme of the EU supports initiatives that contribute to improving citizens' understanding of the EU, encourage civic and democratic participation at EU level and raise awareness about European history and European values. Results of calls EU empowers over 1 300 mobile researchers with grants worth €250 million Individual Fellowships worth €248.7 million in total were awarded to 1 348 talented researchers who applied for funding from the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) in 2017. The budget earmarked for the MSCA Individual Fellowships call to be published in 2018 amounts to €273 million. It will further increase to €295 million in 2019 and to €325 million in 2020. The EU invests €80 million in the future of European research On the 24th of January 2018 the European Commission awarded €80 million in co-funding from the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) for eight doctoral and thirteen postdoctoral research training programmes.
