Statement by the Prime Minister on Poland’s Independence Day
November 11, 2017Ottawa, Ontario
The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement in recognition of Poland’s Independence Day:
“Today, we join Polish communities in Canada and around the world to celebrate Poland’s Independence Day.
“Nearly one million people of Polish descent live in Canada. Our two countries share a lasting bond based on close people-to-people links, common values, and mutual respect.
“Poland and Canada fought together as allies during the Second World War. Today, we work together within multilateral organizations such as the United Nations and NATO, and are partners in progressive trade thanks to the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement. Our ongoing cooperation is based on mutual respect for democracy and human rights.
“Last week, we celebrated the 150th anniversary of the first sitting of the House of Commons. That also marked the first time a Polish Canadian, Alexandre-Edouard Kierzkowski, was elected to our House of Commons.
“As we continue to mark 150 years of Confederation, we celebrate the many cultures and communities that make Canada such a great place to live. Polish Canadians continue to help make Canada the strong, vibrant, and inclusive country it is today.
“On behalf of the Government of Canada, Sophie and I extend our best wishes to all those celebrating Poland’s Independence Day.”
