Do you want to host either the official Opening event or the official Closing event for EU Green Week 2018? Then read on!
This year's edition of Europe's biggest annual environment conference will focus on the theme "Green Cities for a Greener Future" and will promote participatory approaches to urban development, networking schemes, and tools for sharing best practices, engaging citizens and local authorities, and encouraging them to share their vision of a sustainable future, while also highlighting policy developments on air quality, noise, waste and water management.
EU Green Week 2018 will include events across Europe, starting with an official high-level Opening event on the Monday, with a high-level conference in Brussels from Tuesday through to Thursday and ending with an official high-level Closing event on the Friday. These Opening and Closing events will be particularly prominent, setting the tone for the week's debates, and bringing the curtain down with political conclusions at the end.
If your organisation is interested in organising one of these events, you can
submit your proposal by the deadline which is 3 November 2017.
Any city can be a green city, regardless of its location or size. Going green isn't just about green spaces and parks; it's about air quality, noise, public transport, cleanliness and quality of life, and much more besides.
It's also about engaging citizens, and hearing their ideas about how cities can become more green and more liveable. EU Green Week 2018 will explore these themes, and show how Europe is helping cities to become better places to live and work.
What is the added value for your organisation?
- If selected, the European Commission will promote your event on the EU Green Week 2018 website and on social media as an official part of Green Week 2018.
- Potential participation of the Commissioner for Environment, Karmenu Vella, as well as other high-level speakers.
- Your event will be web-streamed and shown on the EU Green Week website.
- You will be provided with harmonised EU Green Week branding through a specific toolkit.
- Promotional items can be provided.
- Other possibilities can be negotiated.
What do you need to consider to make a proposal for the official Opening or Closing?
Events proposed need to be relevant to the theme, must take place on the dates specified, and should envisage high-level political participation.
Opening event
The official Opening event for EU Green Week 2018 will be on Monday, May 21 2018.
- 21 May is a public holiday in a number of EU countries, so events with festive, interactive activities that engage families and other segments of society will be favoured.
- 21 May is also EU Natura 2000 Day, so events that have a connection to nature and biodiversity, and which underline their importance for quality of life or showcase sustainable urban development (with nature-based solutions to urban problems, for example) will also be prioritised.
Closing event
The official Closing event for EU Green Week 2018 is on Friday, May 25 2018.
The main message should be that any city can become greener, and that real changes are eminently possible. Tools such as participatory approaches to governance should be promoted, demonstrating how cities can engage with stakeholders and develop a shared vision for the urban environment, with potential pathways towards that future. Events focusing on governance and involving citizens and other actors will therefore be favoured.
Submission of proposals
The deadline for submission is 3 November 2017 at 17:00 (Brussels time).
