President Trump agrees to meet North Korea’s Kim Jong-un 
Speaking just outside the White House’s West Wing last night, South Korean National Security Advisor Chung Eui-Yong delivered news that President Donald J. Trump’s maximum pressure policy—together with international solidarity driven by American leadership—had brought the North Korea situation to an important juncture

“Today, I had the privilege of briefing President Trump on my recent visit to Pyongyang, North Korea,” Chung said. “In our meeting, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said he is committed to denuclearization. Kim pledged that North Korea will refrain from any further nuclear or missile tests. He understands that the routine joint military exercises between the Republic of Korea and the United States must continue.”

Kim also expressed his eagerness to meet President Trump “as soon as possible.” The President said he would meet Kim Jong-un by May to achieve permanent denuclearization.

“Great progress being made but sanctions will remain until an agreement is reached. Meeting being planned!,” President Trump tweeted last night.

Protecting American steel and aluminum 
President Donald J. Trump is addressing unfair trade practices in the steel and aluminum industries by putting in place a 25 percent tariff on steel imports and 10 percent tariff on aluminum imports.

“Economic vitality, growth, and prosperity at home is absolutely necessary for American power and influence abroad,” the President says. “A Nation that does not protect prosperity at home cannot protect its interests abroad.”

A few key details about these Proclamations:

• Tariffs on steel and aluminum are anticipated to reduce imports to levels needed for these American industries to achieve long-term viability.
• The strengthening of the U.S. domestic steel and aluminum industries will reduce our reliance on foreign producers.
• President Trump is welcoming any country with which we have a security relationship to discuss alternative ways to address these concerns.

Closing the ‘digital gender gap’ 
The revolution in information technology over the past few decades has often been called a “great equalizer.” Yet just as the impact from digital technology is accelerating, far too many women are being left behind. According to USAID, more than a billion and a half women in low- and middle-income countries today still do not own mobile phones.

Yesterday, as the world recognized International Women’s Day, Ivanka Trump joined with USAID Administrator Mark Green to launch USAID’s next women’s empowerment initiative, the WomenConnect Challenge. The initiative is a global call for solutions designed to close the gender digital divide, with USAID identifying and testing promising pilot approaches.

“Through closing the digital gender gap, women can help pull their families out of extreme poverty and serve as active participants and leaders in their societies,” USAID says.

Council of the European Union      9/3/2018  Fighting fraud with non-cash means of payment : Council agrees its position On 9 March 2018, the Council adopted its position on the directive on combating fraud and counterfeiting of non-cash means of payment. The Council is now ready to start negotiations with the Parliament as soon as the latter agrees on its position. The directive aims at updating the current rules to ensure a clear, robust and technology-neutral legal framework is in place. It also eliminates operational obstacles that hamper investigation and prosecution as well as foresees actions to enhance public awareness of fraudulent techniques such as phishing or skimming. "Fraud with credit cards or online shopping is rapidly increasing. Not only it is used to finance criminal groups but it undermines the development of the digital single market as citizens become more reluctant to shop online. We need to put a stop to this and send a clear message to fraudsters that they you will no longer be able to exploit loopholes between Member states. We will now have common rules which will be robust and will ensure that fraudulent behaviours are punished." Tsetska Tsacheva, Bulgarian minister of Justice Main elements of the directive The directive aims to be technology-neutral to encompass not only traditional non-cash payments such as bank cards or cheques but also new ways of making payment which have appeared over recent years : electronic wallets, mobile payments, virtual currencies, etc. The directive includes provisions on: Expanding the scope of the offences to include, for example, transactions through virtual currencies; Harmonising the definitions of some online crime offences, such as hacking a victim's computer or phishing Introducing minimum level for the highest penalties for natural persons Clarifying the scope of jurisdiction to ensure cross border frauds are better dealt with; Improving EU-wide criminal justice cooperation; Improving prevention and awareness-raising to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of fraud. The directive provides for minimum rules so member states are free to go beyond and implement more stringent rules, including a broader definition of offences or higher penalties. Background In 2013, it is estimated that €1.44 billion were gained by criminals through non cash payment fraud. Around 36 billion of phishing messages are sent every year to European citizens. The directive was proposed by the Commission in September 2017 as part of the EU's response to the challenge of cybersecurity. It replaces the Council framework decision 2001/413/JHA dating back to 2001. Next steps Once the European Parliament has defined its position, currently planned for June, trilogues negotiations will start with a view of reaching an agreement as soon as possible. Directive on non-cash fraud - General approach Council of the European Union      9/3/2018  Insurance distribution: Council delays application of new rules The Council has delayed the application of new rules on insurance distribution. On 9 March 2018, it adopted a directive postponing the application date to 1 October 2018. The directive also extends to 1 July 2018 the deadline given to member states to transpose the new rules into national laws and regulations. Directive 2016/97 is aimed at improving consumer protection for insurance products. Adopted in December 2015, it was due to apply from 23 February 2018 and member states initially had until then to transpose it. The delay was decided in the light of implementing rules issued by the Commission in September 2017. The delay will enable the insurance industry to better prepare the changes necessary to comply with the implementing rules. The implementing rules deal with: product oversight and governance requirements for insurance companies and insurance distributors; information requirements and other rules applicable to the distribution of insurance-based investment products. The directive was adopted at a meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council, without discussion. This follows an agreement with the European Parliament. The Parliament approved the directive on 1 March 2018. Prime Minister announces new Commissioner and Administrator of Yukon

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced the appointments of Angélique Bernard as the next Commissioner of Yukon and Adeline Webber as the next Administrator of the territory.

Since moving to Yukon in 1995, Angélique Bernard has worked hard to advance Francophone rights and women’s rights, making sure they have access to the services they need to thrive. A devoted member of the territory’s francophone community, she served as president of the Association franco-yukonnaise for seven years and is currently the organization’s vice-president.

Adeline Webber is a proud member of the Teslin Tlingit First Nation. She was born and raised in Whitehorse, where she spent most of her career working in the federal public service. Ms. Webber has worked diligently to advance the recognition of Indigenous women’s rights, and played an important role in the implementation of land claims and First Nation self-government agreements in the territory.

The Prime Minister took the opportunity to recognize Douglas Phillips, whose term as Commissioner ended January 31, 2018, for his long career in service to Yukoners. He also thanked the outgoing Administrator, Gerald Isaac, for his service, including his work fulfilling the legislative function of Commissioner since the position became vacant in January.

Prime Minister announces new Commissioner Designate of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today announced the appointment of Brenda Lucki as the new Commissioner Designate of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). This appointment is effective April 16, 2018.

A proven leader, Ms. Lucki brings with her a diverse background and the expertise needed to keep our communities safe and secure while addressing the needs of the RCMP. She will play a vital role in advancing reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples, promoting gender equity, supporting mental wellness across the RCMP, addressing workplace harassment, and protecting the civil liberties of all Canadians.

Ms. Lucki has enjoyed a long and distinguished career at the RCMP. In her nearly 32 years with the national police force, she has served in Divisions in Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Alberta, and Saskatchewan, worked with the United Nations in the former Yugoslavia, and helped train and select police units for the UN Civilian Police Mission in Haiti.

Since October 2016, Ms. Lucki has served as the Commanding Officer of “Depot” Division, ensuring cadets receive the best possible training – including diversity training – before they begin to serve our communities.

The Prime Minister made this announcement during an event at the RCMP Academy, “Depot” Division. On behalf of all Canadians, the Prime Minister also thanked Daniel Dubeau for assuming leadership of the RCMP after the retirement of former Commissioner Bob Paulson. Both Mr. Dubeau and Mr. Paulson were recognized for their efforts to modernize and strengthen Canada’s national police force.

8 Μάρτη: Παγκόσμια ημέρα της Γυναίκας.

Δυστυχώς έχουμε ακόμα να κάνουμε πολλά ...

Mε αντεστραμμένη την τάση βελτίωσης της έμφυλης ισότητας γιορτάζουμε φέτος την παγκόσμια ημέρα της γυναίκας.  Πιο συγκεκριμένα και σύμφωνα με την έρευνα του Παγκόσμιου Οικονομικού Φόρουμ  ενώ πέρσι η εργασιακή ισότητα υπολογιζόταν ότι θα επιτευχθεί σε 170 χρόνια φέτος τα στοιχεία δείχνουν ότι χρειαζόμαστε 217!  Αλλά  γενικότερα και στους τομείς της εκπαίδευσης, της  υγείας αλλά και της πολιτικής εκπροσώπησης το χάσμα μεγεθύνεται τα τελευταία χρόνια μετά από μία σχετική ανάκαμψη στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 2010, αναδεικνύοντας ότι η ευρύτερη οπισθοδρόμηση της δυτική κοινωνίας στα θέματα ισότητας και δικαιωμάτων δεν αφήνει τις μητέρες, τις αδερφές, τις συζύγους, τις εργαζόμενες, τις γυναίκες ανεπηρέαστες. Με καλύτερο τομέα αυτόν της εκπαίδευσης και χειρότερο αυτόν της πολιτικής οι ερευνητές/τριες υπολογίζουν ότι - με τα δεδομένα του 2017- χρειάζονται 100 χρόνια για την πλήρη  ισότητα σε όλους τους τομείς.  Αν σε αυτά τα στοιχεία προστεθούν  η  έξαρση της έμφυλης βίας παγκοσμίως (σε όλες τις μορφές της) και η  όλο και μεγαλύτερη διάχυση της ακροδεξιάς ρητορικής σε όλη την Ευρώπη αλλά και στις ΗΠΑ -η οποία προπαγανδίζει ανοιχτά την έμφυλη ανισότητα και την επιστροφή στους παραδοσιακούς  ρόλους- καταλαβαίνουμε ότι το τοπίο στο πεδίο της ισότητας των δύο φύλων είναι  ζοφερό.

Για τους λόγους αυτούς οι Οικολόγοι Πράσινοι θεωρούν ότι  η ανάγκη για επαγρύπνηση και συνεχή αγώνα είναι διαχρονικά  επιτακτική και τα προτάγματα των πρώτων φεμινιστικών κινημάτων παραμένουν τραγικά επίκαιρα για πολλές κοινωνίες του πλανήτη μας. Οι Οικολόγοι Πράσινοι, όπως και οι Ευρωπαίοι Πράσινοι, εφαρμόζουμε πολιτικές πρακτικές ενσωμάτωσης και συμμετοχής των γυναικών στο χώρο της ενεργού πολιτικής. Ελπίζαμε ότι σύντομα θα φτάσει η ώρα που δεν θα χρειάζεται να στηρίζουμε την γυναικεία συμμετοχή με κανονισμούς και τεχνάσματα, αλλά φαίνεται ότι η προσπάθεια που χρειάζεται από το σύνολο της κοινωνίας είναι ολοένα και μεγαλύτερη.

 Χαιρετίζουμε την κατάθεση στο Ελληνικό κοινοβούλιο (αν και με μεγάλη καθυστέρηση) στις 5 Μαρτίου της Σύμβασης της Κωνσταντινούπολης που έμενε σε εκκρεμότητα στη χώρα μας από το 2011 παρά το ότι  η Ελλάδα ήταν μία από τις πρώτες 13 χώρες που την είχαν υπογράψει. Ωστόσο διεκδικούμε από την κυβέρνηση τη συνεχή έμπρακτη προσπάθεια για ενίσχυσής του ρόλου της γυναίκας στο κοινωνικό γίγνεσθαι. Δεν μας έμεινε απαρατήρητο ότι μετά τον τελευταίο μικρό ανασχηματισμό, ο αριθμός των γυναικών στο υπουργικό σχήμα μειώθηκε.

 Τέλος, σημειώνουμε ότι οι Οικολόγοι Πράσινοι συμμετέχουμε στην καμπάνια του Ευρωπαϊκού Πράσινου Κόμματος Women’s Day, πιστεύοντας ότι η ισότητα των φύλων αποτελεί βασικό προαπαιτούμενο για κοινωνική δικαιοσύνη  και σας καλούμε  όλους/ες για την συμμετοχή σας.
