Groups Hail Third Three-Country Leadership Mission The joint delegation with Israeli President Reuven Rivlin. An 18-member delegation of leaders of the American Hellenic and American Jewish organizations completed a third, three-country Leadership Mission to Greece, Cyprus and Israel, to explore the major political, economic and security developments underway in the eastern Mediterranean and to advance the interests of the United States in the region.  In a post-mission statement, the groups noted: "Our meetings clearly revealed that the trilateral relationship between Israel, Cyprus and Greece is on a sustained course and is expanding on all levels. We believe the relationship has developed into a partnership, helping to foster peace and stability in the eastern Mediterranean and the broader region where instability exists. Further, the partnership possesses the potential to allow the eastern Mediterranean to become a community of nations based on shared common values and aspirations. Hollister visited the Patriarchate of Jerusalem and had an audience with His Beatitude Theophilos III, Patriarch of Jerusalem and All Palestine, January 20. Canadian President Christos Argiriou, Chairman of the Board Nick Aroutzidis, Executive Director Basil Mossaidis, and Consultant Andrew Kaffes, accompanied the supreme president. Supreme President Hollister presented Patriarch Theophilos with an American Flag, which was flown over the U.S. Capitol, thanks to U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis. Patriarch Theophilos presented Supreme President Hollister with the Icon of the Nativity. They shaped it into terraces covered with 1,000 tonnes of specially imported gleaming white stone to give it the appearance of a giant stepped pyramid rising from the Aegean: the most imposing manmade structure in all the Cyclades archipelago.  read more    Huge protest in Greece over use of 'Macedonia' in name dispute NBC News (Jan. 22)   Hundreds of thousands of Greeks rallied on Sunday in protest at any use of "Macedonia" in resolving the 25-year-old dispute between Athens and Skopje over the neighboring ex-Yugoslav republic's name.  Greece says the name Macedonia implies a territorial claim over its own northern region of that name. The two countries agreed earlier this month to renew efforts to settle the row, which has blocked the republic's attempts to join NATO and the European Union. Both countries say they hope to reach an accord by June.  read more    New Greek Neo-Nazi Group Threatens Muslims, Migrants The National Herald (Jan. 21)     With Greece's government pushing for the opening of the first official mosque in the country - paid by taxpayers during a crushing economic crisis - the country's Muslims are increasingly finding themselves under threat and violence.  A neo-Nazi group called Crypteia, believed to be an even more aggressive offshoot of the ultra-extreme right Golden Dawn from which they broke off warned the Muslim Association of Greece and pro-migrants groups they are targets, Al-Jazeera reported.  read more  Greek Scientist Develops Blood Test to Detect 8 Common Cancers Greek Reporter (Jan. 19)     American researchers, led by Greek scientist Prof. Nickolas Papadopoulos, have developed a single blood test which screens for eight common cancer types and helps identify the location of the disease.  The test, called CancerSEEK, simultaneously evaluates levels of eight cancer proteins and the presence of cancer gene mutations from circulating DNA in the blood.  It is aimed at screening for eight common cancer types that account for more than 60 percent of cancer deaths in the U.S. Five of the cancers covered by the test currently have no screening test.  read more  US embassy in Athens welcomes MoU between GE Power Services and PPC  ANA-MPA (Jan. 17)   The US embassy in Athens, in a statement to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA), on Wednedsay, highlighted the value of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Pubic Power Corporation (PPC) and the European branch of General Electric as well as other similar agreements in the Greek and American economies. "We welcome the recent MoU between GE Power Services and Greece's Public Power Corporation. We believe it is indicative of the confidence GE has in the future of the Greek economy, the role Greece can have on the regional energy map, and it is a good step forward in our bilateral economic relationship.  read more    Face of 9,000-Year-Old Teenager Reconstructed  National Geographic (Jan. 19)   Her name is Avgi, and the last time anyone saw her face was nearly 9,000 years ago. When she lived in Greece, at the end of the Mesolithic period around 7000 B.C., the region was transitioning from a society of hunter gatherers to one that began cultivating its own food.  In English, Avgi translates to Dawn-a name archaeologists chose because she lived during what's considered the dawn of civilization.  read more     Two Greeks on Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe list Ekathimerini (Jan. 23)   A 24-year-old Greek innovator who devised a way to utilize washed-up seagrass has made it onto this year's prestigious Forbes list of 30 European entrepreneurs under the age of 30 who are shaking up their respective sectors in 2018.  Stavros Tsompanidis is the founder of PHEE, a company based in the western port city of Patra that manufactures gift boxes and accessories from dead Neptune grass (Posidonia oceanica), hailed by Forbes as being one of the "first to turn this plant into a useful product."  read more
