California's 44th Annual Gala, held in Los Angeles, March 31, 2018. Supreme President Hollister appreciated the opportunity to offer greetings to the audience. He also had the opportunity to discuss AHEPA's public policy priorities with U.S. Representatives Brad Sherman (D-CA), a senior member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, and Judy Chu (D-CA). Both legislators are members of the Congressional Hellenic Caucus. The gala honored: Kelly Vlahakis-Hanks, CEO/president, Earth Friendly Products; world-renowned archaeologist, Prof. John Camp, who is a Stavros Niarchos Foundation professor of Classics and the director of the Athenian Agora, American School of Classical Studies at Athens; and Real Estate Developer, Philanthropist, and Community Advocate Aris Anagnos. Supreme Governor George Booras accompanied the supreme president.
President of the Republic of Cyprus Writes to AHEPA
Supreme President Carl R. Hollister received a letter from President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades. President Anastasiades thanked Supreme President Hollister for his letter congratulating President Anastasiades on his re-election in February. "...I look forward to further strengthen our longstanding cooperation with AHEPA," the Cypriot president wrote. President Anastasiades added he appreciates AHEPA's support for Cyprus's efforts to reach a comprehensive solution and that he looks forward to meeting with AHEPA in May during AHEPA's annual overseas excursion.

Greece vs. Turkey: Are We Headed for an Intra-NATO War?

The Aegean Sea between Greece and Turkey hosts one of the world's highest concentrations of high-tech weaponry. Sixty-seven surface ships and two dozen submarines are deployed on a body of water the size of Lake Superior. The two air forces command 448 fighter jets armed with smart bombs and guided missiles. On land, 832 heavy tanks and more than 2,500 lighter artillery vehicles-as much tank firepower as in all the rest of Europe combined-could rapidly be brought to bear along a Greek-Turkish border only 105 miles long. read more

Greece: 58 Migrants Rescued off Greek Island in Aegean Sea

Dozens of migrants who sent out a distress call while off the coast of the eastern Aegean island of Samos were rescued Monday after their boat was towed to land, Greek authorities said. The boat, carrying 58 people, was located north of Samos in rough seas and was towed to the island by the European border agency Frontex, the Greek coast guard said. read more
Greece says Turkey may be holding two soldiers for political gain

Greece said on Monday that Turkey appeared to be seeking some political leverage by continuing to hold two of its soldiers without trial for a month since they crossed a land border between the two countries. The border guards were detained after crossing the frontier in a heavily forested area in north-eastern Greece in bad weather on March 1. "It appears that Turkey - and this was one of our concerns from the outset - wants to use this for political purposes," said Greek government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos. read more
Migrants: EU announces 180 mn for Greece refugees

The European Commission has announced an additional 180 million euros for aid projects in Greece, including expanding the Emergency Support to Integration & Accommodation (ESTIA) program which aids refugees move from camps to urban accommodation, and provides them with regular financial assistance. The funding comes as the commissioner for humanitarian aid and crisis management, Christos Stylianides, met in Athens with Greek premier, Alexis Tsipras. read more
His brown eyes sunken and flat, Jahangir Baroch had spent another sleepless night in the metal container on the Greek island of Lesbos where he has lived for more than a year. "There was no electricity in the container last night," Mr. Baroch, 26, said desperately, at a center for refugees, away from the holding camp in Moria, where he is housed. "It was like a fridge." "I want to go to Athens," said Mr. Baroch, who came from Baluchistan, an embattled province in Pakistan. "If you don't want me, I want to go to another country." read more
After spat, BBC spy show gets access to ancient Greek temple

A panel of archaeologists has granted a British television crew access to an ancient site near Athens to film scenes for a TV adaptation of spy novelist John le Carre's "The Little Drummer Girl" - reversing a decision last week following strong government criticism. The Central Archaeological Council on Tuesday granted access to the 2,500-year-old Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion on April 12 after the production company said it would limit the number of hours needed. read more

There are few sights in the world more inspiring than the Acropolis, whether it is shining by the incomparable light of Attiki, or honored by man-made illumination at night, but the attentive visitor will find that the exquisite taste and architectural vision of the Hellenes did not expire with the passing of paganism in the Mediterranean world. The little-known ancient Byzantine Churches of the Attiki region will shine in all their glory during the Resurrection and Agape services this weekend, but they are worth visiting any time of year. read more
