AHEPA, and its affiliated organizations, celebrated the 197th Anniversary of Greek Independence with the American Hellenic community at a White House ceremony held March 22, 2018. President Donald J. Trump and His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios, Geron of America, provided remarks.
"We sincerely thank President Trump for hosting the event and for issuing a Proclamation that calls on the people of the United States to observe Greek Independence Day with appropriate ceremonies and activities," Supreme President Carl R. Hollister said. read more

Annually, AHEPA family chapters, districts, and our communities, work together to promote parades across the country, to secure Proclamations from state and local governments, to organize flag-raising ceremonies at various State Capitols and City Halls, or to lay wreaths at memorial sites. AHEPA Applauds FY18 Appropriations Bill
AHEPA commends Congress for passage of the FY2018 Omnibus appropriations bill, which was signed into law by President Donald J. Trump, March 23, 2018, announced Supreme President Carl R. Hollister.
"The legislation is a significant win for United States-Greece relations in addition to AHEPA family's community service programs, especially affordable housing for the elderly and resources for victims of domestic violence," Hollister said. "We commend Congress, and especially thank congressional appropriators, congressional leadership, and our champions, for substantial investment in a multitude of federal programs important to the AHEPA family's mission and U.S.-Greece relations." read more

Galanis attended the Enthronement of His Eminence Metropolitan Nathanael at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Chicago, March 24. In addition, Past Supreme President and Past Chairman of the Board Nicholas A. EU leaders condemn Turkey for 'illegal actions' as transgressions continue

European Union leaders meeting in Brussels on Thursday unanimously condemned Turkey for its aggression toward Greece and Cyprus and called on Ankara to release two Greek soldiers who have been in Turkish custody for more than three weeks. In a draft common statement, the European Council "strongly condemns Turkey's continued illegal actions in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean Sea" and underlines its "full solidarity with Cyprus and Greece." read more
Turkey denies arrested Greek soldiers provisional release

A Turkish court has again ruled against the release from jail of two Greek soldiers who strayed across the border and are accused of illegal entry into a military zone and espionage. read more
EU leaders set to condemn Turkey over Cyprus gas blockade
ABC News (March 22)
European Union leaders are set to condemn Turkey's efforts to stop natural gas exploration off Cyprus ahead of a meeting next week between top EU officials and President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In a draft statement, seen by The Associated Press Thursday, they call on Turkey "to cease these actions and respect the sovereign rights of Cyprus to explore and exploit its natural resources in accordance with EU and international law." read more
U.S. drops charges against Turkish president's guards who allegedly beat up protesters
CBS News (March 23)
U.S. prosecutors said Thursday they have dismissed all criminal charges against seven of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's bodyguards stemming from a brawl in Washington last year in which protesters were beaten. The charges were dropped last month just a day ahead of a meeting between Erdogan and now-outgoing Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, but the State Department said the timing was coincidental. read more

The station commander at RAF Coningsby, Lincolnshire has visited 3 (Fighter) Squadron as it takes part in a NATO exercise in Greece. Exercise Iniochos 18 is a multi-national air warfare exercise that is organised annually by Greece's Hellenic Air Force. This year, 3 (Fighter) squadron is joined by the United States, Italy, the United Arab Emirates, Cyprus and Israel. Over 70 fast jets of various types have been flying on sorties that have built up to simulate full-scale warfighting across Greek airspace. read more

Greek guard Georgios Kalaitzakis to declare for NBA draft

Greek guard Georgios Kalaitzakis told ESPN that he will declare for the 2018 NBA draft. "I am very happy with Panathinaikos, but I decided to enter the draft because it's my dream to play in the NBA," Kalaitzakis wrote ESPN. "With hard work and commitment, I think I will achieve my goal." Kalaitzakis, a 19-year-old, 6-foot-6 combo guard, emerged on the NBA radar at the U18 European Championship this past summer, averaging 14.4 points, 6.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 28 minutes over seven contests, and was rated the eighth-best NBA prospect at the event. read more
