AHEPA Supports 3rd Archon International Conference on Religious Freedom, Hosts Luncheon This week, Ahepans are attending the 3rd Archon International Conference on Religious Freedom themed, "The Persecution of Christians in the Holy Lands & Middle East: Consequences & Solutions." The conference, held in Washington, DC, began December 4 and concludes this evening.  Conference attendees have heard presentations and remarks from religious leaders, scholars, and policymakers.  Among the legislators who have addressed the conference were: U.S. Senator Cardin. Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD), ranking member, Senate Foreign Relations Committee; U.S. Sen. James Lankford (R-OK), U.S. Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), co-chair, Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe and who serves as chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee that oversees Human Rights; and Hellenic Caucus Co-Chairs U.S. Reps. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) and Carolyn Maloney (D-NY). Watch: Session Two: "Persecution of Christians and Possible Solutions"    Congressman Bilirakis. In addition, AHEPA will host today's conference luncheon at the Newseum where Supreme President Carl R. Hollister will offer welcoming remarks.  "AHEPA is proud to support the Archons and is honored to host today's conference luncheon as we build upon the week's substantive discussion about the persecution of Christians in the Middle East and Holy Lands," Hollister said. In his luncheon remarks, Hollister will commend the conference organizers and participants. He also will add that the important work continues to keep this issue at the forefront after the conference concludes. "Please count AHEPA as an ally in this worthy endeavor," he will say. In addition to Supreme President Hollister, Daughters of Penelope Grand President Eva Jean Fomalont, DOP Grand Vice President Demi Thomas, Supreme Secretary Jimmy Kokotas, DOP Grand Treasurer Kathy Bizoukas, Supreme Governor Peter Nassos, Past Supreme President Andrew C. Join AHEPA Now Greek American News Digest   Editor's Note:  Editorials, Commentaries, and Opinion pieces are shared for information purposes only and do not necessarily reflect the views or policy positions of the Order of AHEPA, its affiliated organizations, and members.   Greece, Creditors Reach Deal on Latest Reforms Wall Street Journal (Dec. 2)    Greece and its international creditors reached a preliminary agreement on the measures Athens must adopt, thus paving the way for the disbursement of around €5 billion ($5.95 billion) in funds next month and bringing the country a step closer to the end of years of bailout regimes.  A delegation from the European Commission, the European Central Bank, the eurozone's bailout fund and the International Monetary Fund reached a technical agreement late Saturday with Greek officials.  read more    Greece Just Witnessed Something It Hasn't Seen Since 2006 Bloomberg (Dec. 4)   Greece's economy expanded for a third straight quarter for the first time in more than a decade, providing a foundation for the country's attempts to exit its bailout program next year.  Gross domestic product grew 0.3 percent in the three months through September after expanding a revised 0.8 percent in the previous quarter, the Hellenic Statistical Authority said in a statement on Monday. From a year earlier, GDP grew 1.3 percent.  read more    Learning to code will eventually be as useful as learning Ancient Greek Quartz at Work (Nov. 22)    On the threshold of the Santa Fe Institute (SFI), the world's epicenter for complexity science, a plaque in Greek characters shares Plato's admonishment: "Let no man ignorant of geometry enter here." While it's far more impressive in Ancient Greek, few visitors to SFI can read it. Eventually the same will be true of computer code. It will become the Ancient Greek of the late 21st century.  read more    Erdogan Going to Greece Next Week in Groundbreaking Visit New York Times (Nov. 30)   President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey will make a groundbreaking trip to Greece next week as the first Turkish head of state to visit the country in 65 years, Turkey's Foreign Ministry confirmed Thursday.  Mr. Erdogan is scheduled to visit Greece on Dec. 7-8, Turkey's deputy prime minister, Hakan Cavusoglu, announced this week. A Greek government spokesman said, however, that the visit had yet to be confirmed. read more    Mike Moustakas collects third comeback player award Kansas City Star  (Dec. 1)   Royals third baseman Mike Moustakas has collected another accolade for his resurgent season in 2017, winning Major League Baseball's AL comeback player of the year award on Friday afternoon.  Moustakas previously won comeback player of the year honors from The Sporting News and the MLB Players' Choice Awards.  read more    Greek-American Restauranteur Dean J. Poll and the History of Gallaghers The National Herald (Dec. 1)   Greek-American restauranteur Dean J. Poll recalled the restaurants of old New York in a recent article in the New York Times. "Luchnow's is gone, Mama Leone's, Now the Four Seasons as we knew it, we'll never it see again," Poll told the Times, adding the French restaurant La Caravelle and the Cattleman steakhouse which featured nightly singalongs, have also closed down.   One of the venerable old New York restaurants still going strong is Gallaghers, 228 West 52nd Street in Manhattan, which Poll owns since 2013 and recently renovated for $5 million. Once a favorite spot for Broadway stars and gangsters, Gallaghers with its famous meat locker in the front window recalls the short stories of Damon Runyon which inspired many projects, including the musical Guys & Dolls.  read more
