Statement by the Prime Minister on the new Premier of Nunavut

The Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, today issued the following statement on the selection of Paul Quassa as the Premier of Nunavut:
“On behalf of all Canadians, I offer my sincere congratulations to Paul Quassa on being chosen by the Nunavut Legislative Assembly to lead the territorial government.
“I look forward to working with Premier Quassa and the new government. By coming together in a spirit of cooperation, I know we can deliver true, meaningful reconciliation between Canada and Indigenous Peoples, and bring about a better quality of life for Indigenous Peoples in Nunavut.
“The Government of Canada will continue to work with Indigenous, territorial, and provincial partners to co-develop a new Arctic Policy Framework that better reflects the needs and priorities of the North, and builds stronger, more sustainable communities in the region.
“I extend my sincere thanks to Peter Taptuna for his contributions to Nunavut and to Canada during his time as Premier. I wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”
