Ahepans Prepare Thanksgiving Meals for the Elderly
Ahepans from Arrowhead Chapter 302, San Bernardino, Calif., prepared and served Thanksgiving meals for the residents of AHEPA 302 Senior Apartments, which is an affordable housing for the elderly property, Nov. 22. The property opened in 2009. It is subsidized by the U.S. Housing & Urban Development (HUD) Section 202 Housing for the Elderly program. There are 95 AHEPA National Housing Corporation affordable housing for the elderly properties in 21 states.

AHEPA Happenings | Testimonial for PSG Tsekerides
District 6 (New York) held a testimonial dinner in honor of 2007 National Ahepan of the Year and two-term Past Supreme Governor Elias Tsekerides (pictured center), of Westchester Chapter 51, Yonkers, N.Y., Nov. 26. The brothers presented him with a proclamation detailing his years of service to the community, which also include serving as President of the Pan-Pontian Federation of the United States and Canada and President of the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York.  Brother Tsekerides is pictured with (l-r): Supreme Governor Tom Dushas, District 6 Governor Ted Stamas, Brother Tsekerides, Supreme Treasurer George G. Horiates, Esq., and Past Supreme President and Past Board of Trustees Chairman Nicholas A. Karacostas.

Veterans Honored from Coast to Coast
AHEPA's Veterans Committee reports several events were held by
AHEPA districts and chapters to honor and recognize Veterans for their service during November.  One of the larger commemorations occurred in Clearwater, Fla., where 27 Veterans were honored by the community at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, Nov. 13. In District 5 (New Jersey and Delaware), District Governor Zenon Christodoulou and Past District Governor and Veteran George Karatzia laid a wreath at the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

Surge in Migrants Creates Abysmal Conditions on Greek Islands
Wall Street Journal (Nov. 26)
Three months ago, Shehab Kabalan, a 20-year-old from Syria, traveled in a small boat from Turkey to Greece in the hope of receiving asylum in Europe and starting a new life.  Instead he is trapped on the island of Samos, living in a flimsy tent among dozens of other migrants and refugees, prevented from traveling to the mainland and now bracing for a hard winter.  read more 
 
Toll from Greek floods rises to 23 as 2 new deaths reported
ABC News (Nov. 27)
 
Greek authorities on Monday raised to 23 the death toll from heavy flooding near Athens this month, after one more body was found and an injured woman died in hospital.  The Fire Brigade said the man's body was found buried in mud near a bus station in the small town of Mandra, west of Athens, that suffered the brunt of the Nov. 15 flash floods.  It was not immediately clear whether the victim was the person listed as missing following the floods, which also damaged about 1,000 buildings.  read more 
 
Berlin declines comment on possible other uses for unused loans to Greece
Reuters (Nov. 27)
 
A spokesman for the German Finance Ministry declined to comment on Monday on possible alternative uses for unused credits for Greece after the euro zone bailout fund's head suggested left-over credit could be allocated to other purposes.  He said Greece's lenders would provide an update on the country's situation at a meeting on Dec. 4, adding: "I don't want to pre-empt the next meeting of the Eurogroup."  read more 
 
Eni targets Cyprus drilling by year end

Eni and partner Total are targeting drilling on Block 6 offshore Cyprus by the end of this year, the Italian major has said.  It will be just nine months after the signature of the Block 6 exploration and production sharing contract (EPSC), the firm has said. Following the well on Block 6, Eni and partner Kogas will start the drilling the first exploration well in Block 3, Eni said.  The comments were made following a visit by Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi to Nicosia, Cyprus, where he met with the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Anastasiadis.  read more 

Lalaounis Continues to Create 'Jewelry With a Soul 
New York Times (Nov. 22)

Family lore has it that when the hospital discharged each of Ilias Lalaounis's four daughters after their births, the first place their father took them was not home but to his jewelry workshop, an intricate labyrinth of studios and staircases in the shadow of the Acropolis. "My dad said it was to get the smell of the workshop," his third daughter, Maria Lalaounis, said with a laugh. "He wanted to make sure it was in our DNA and in our senses."  read more

Peter J. Pappas, passed away at 77
Greek News (Nov. 25)
 
Greek American businessman and philanthropist Peter J. Pappas of New York has passed away on Thanksgiving Day, November 23 2017, following a short illness. He was 77 years old. He is survived by his wife Catherine Skiadas - Pappas, Children Peter Jr., Jamie and Tara, and nine Grandchildren.  read more
