Disaster Relief Fund Opened in Wake of Hurricanes

 

AHEPA has opened its Emergency Relief Fund to provide assistance to the victims of Hurricanes Harvey and Irma, announced Supreme President CarlHollister, who visited Houston on September 2. Hollister presented an initial $15,000 donation and pledged to raise $100,000 by month's end.  

Last weekend, Supreme Secretary Jimmy Kokotas joined with relief organizations to help families impacted by Harvey

AHEPA Applauds Senator Van Hollen, Appropriators for Passing Pro U.S.-Greece Funding Measure
AHEPA applauds Senate appropriators for voting to strengthen U.S.-Greece military-to-military relations in their FY2018 State, Foreign Operations and Related Programs Appropriations Bill, announced Supreme President Carl Hollister. Thanks to the advocacy of Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), the bill, if enacted, will increase funding for Greece's International Military Education and Training (IMET) Program to $425,000, which is $275,000 above the Trump administration's recommended FY18 funding level and $225,000 above the previous enacted funding level.

In addition, Senator Van Hollen, and Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT), offered an amendment that prohibits U.S. taxpayer dollars from funding the sale of weapons to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's security detail. The amendment passed via voice vote. (Associated Press story)

"We appreciate Senator Van Hollen for spearheading these two important measures, and furthermore, we thank the Senate Appropriations Committee, chaired by Senator Lindsey Graham, and Ranking Member Leahy, for passing them," Hollister said.
U.S. Congressman Dent, Ahepan, Announces Retirement
U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent (R-PA), a member of AHEPA Chapter 60, Allentown, Pa., announced his retirement at the conclusion of the 115th Congress in 2018. 

"We are grateful for Congressman Dent's public service and for his support for housing for elderly, especially AHEPA 60 Apartments in Allentown," Supreme President Carl Hollister. "We're proud to count him as a Brother Ahepan, and we wish him well in his future endeavors after Congress." 


AHEPA Welcomes Congressman Krishnamoorthi to HellenicCaucus
AHEPA welcomes news that U.S. Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) has joined the Congressional Hellenic Caucus, announced Supreme President Carl Hollister. The congressman represents the 8th Congressional District of Illinois, which includes the west and northwest suburbs of Chicago. Membership in the Hellenic Caucus now stands at 127.

"We sincerely thank Congressman Krishnamoorthi, a son of immigrants, for joining the Caucus," Hollister said. "We look forward to working with him, and his staff, on issues of importance to the American Hellenic community."

AHEPA Congratulates Galis on Hall of Fame Induction
AHEPA conveys a heartfelt congratulations to Nick Galis upon his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Class of 2017, on September 8. Galis, a member of the Class of 2013 AHEPA Hellenic Athletic Hall of Fame, is widely considered the greatest basketball player in Greek history.

Macron ends Greek visit with surprise stroll through town

Wrapping up a visit to Greece, French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte, departed from the official program Friday to stroll down a crowded central Athens shopping street, delighting selfie-thirsty pedestrians but inconveniencing those unfortunate enough to get stuck in the ensuing traffic jams.  read more

And, the form went on, what were my memories of it? Circulated far and wide across Athens, the questionnaire and its findings are part of a vast inventory of 19th- and early 20th-century buildings that now stand at the heart of a burgeoning cultural heritage crisis in Greece. At least 10,600 buildings are on the database and it is growing by the day.  read more




Energean gets approval to develop field offshore Greece
Ekathimerini (Sept. 8) 

Energean, Greece's sole oil producer, said on Friday it had secured approval to develop the Kataloko field in Western Greece, its third such project in the Eastern Mediterranean.  read more
