EUROPEAN YOUTH PRESS update

Newsletter

January 2017

Dear young media makers,

As we look forward to 2017 I’d like to take this opportunity to wish all our members and subscribers a happy New Year!

By way of introduction myself and Jana Fintova were recently elected as new executive board members at EYP. We’re both excited to start our work and join Martin, Catalina, Milica and Haris in ensuring that youth journalism remains well-represented and a top priority among our partners and stakeholders. I’d like to say a special thanks to Anna Saraste and Dmitri Romanovski for all their hard work over the past couple of years.

While the new year is always a time for new beginnings, and soon-to-be-neglected gym memberships, this year presents a unique set of challenges. Across the world, journalism is coming under increasing pressure and as young journalists it’s vital that we fight for journalism as a social good and civic necessity.

All too often young people are criticised for failing to engage with democracy. Let’s challenge that stereotype.

We call on our members and supporters to speak up and propose projects that ensure youth journalism, and in turn the rights and interests of young people, are protected and represented. If you have an idea, or are already working on a project you think EYP might be able to help with then let’s talk. My email is g.bianchi@youthpress.org

EYP will continue advocating our core aims including teaching media literacy, encouraging journalistic quality and advocating for greater representation of women and minorities in the media. We already have some great projects on the horizon - from helping our partners develop apps promoting youth engagement in European democracy, to our annual European Youth Media Days.

As always, we aim to share as many pieces of news and upcoming opportunities as possible in this newsletter. Please send your contributions and stay in touch with us via emailFacebookTwitter and LinkedIn. We are here for you!

Thanks for taking the time to read this editorial, and we wish everyone the best for 2017.

Board member
