EJC launches the Global Health Journalism Grant Programme for Germany

Freelance journalists covering health, science, development cooperation and international affairs are invited to apply for our newly launched Global Health Journalism Grant Programme. Over the coming 18 months, we will award 16 stipends to freelance journalists, each worth €10,000 (plus additional cost reimbursement opportunities). Each fellow will create and publish a series of items that shed light on health-related issues in developing countries, while also placing health within the broader context of development cooperation, political stability, migration, and international relations. There are no citizenship or nationality requirements as long as the reporting is produced in German or has relevant reach in Germany.Submit an application before 29 March 2017 here. We are wrapping up the production of three new free LEARNO.NETcourses, Bulletproof Data Journalism (by Stijn Debrouwere), Going Viral Using Social Media Analytics (by Stijn Debrouwere) and Mistakes We Made So You Don't Have To: Data Visualisation, Journalism and the Web (by Jonathon Berlin). Covering the European Small and Mid-cap Awards 2016

Finally another opportunity for journalists covering SMEs, innovation, business, employment and EU affairs! To mark the 2016 European Small and Mid-Cap Awards, the EJC will hold a side-event for journalists to discuss the Investment Plan, EU financial instruments, alternative financing and FinTech, followed by fireside chats with this year’s Awards finalists, the EC's leading experts and jury members. Accountability Journalism Fund launched in Bolivia

Together with local partner, Fundacion para el Periodismothe EJC launched ‘Fondo Spotlight’ in September to support accountability journalism projects in Bolivia. Of the many applications received, teams from five independent media outlets were selected by an international jury including representatives from the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism in New York and the Clarin Journalism School in Buenos Aires. Teams will focus their reportage productions on pressing economic and social issues - from maternal health, to the environment, and human trafficking. Contact us for more details at laporte@ejc.net.

EJC's popular Media Landscapes are getting a complete overhaul in 2017, and will be moved to a dedicated platform. Funded by Dutch Ministry OCW, it will be launched with 12 brand new articles. Awards for our Innovation in Development Reporting projects

Over the past months, our Innovation in Development Reporting grantees have produced some outstanding storytelling. Join us in celebrating their well-deserved recognition!
  • Medicamentalia, an investigation into the accessibility of medicines around the world produced by Fundación Ciudadana Civio, won the Gabriel Garcia Marquez Journalism Award in the Innovation category as well as the 2016 Data Journalism Award for the best investigation of the year, in the small newsroom category.
  • Our grantees from DIE WELT won Bronze at The Lovie Awards for their amazing yearlong reporting on water! Read the interview with the project lead Sonja Gillert.
  • Our grantees Jeronimo Giorgi and Angelo Attanasio have been awarded the King of Spain’s International Journalism Award in the digital journalism category for Connecting Africa- a multimedia project on how new technologies are changing the lives of people across Africa.
  • Last but not least, congratulations to our grantee Dirk Gilsonwho won the Best Use of Photography Award at the Online Media Awards for his webdoc 'Banished' about menstruation taboos in Nepal.
