2015 is the European Year for Development, and a
high-level meeting kicked off the year in Riga where EU institutions,
Member States, and civil society representatives met to formulate
expectations for an important cross road for development
cooperation globally.
The Chair of
Parliament's Committee on Development, Linda McAvan, along with the
President of the European Commission, the Latvian Prime Minister and the
EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, were
among the first to address the auditorium in Latvia's National
Library in the morning of 9 January in Latvia, Riga.
In her speech, the Committee Chair
outlined what should be achieved in the course of the year. She
mentioned broader appreciation of the successes of development
aid, broad public ownership of the future post-2015 Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs), concrete targets and strategies for the EU how
to implement the SDGs, and concrete and tangible project to be launched
during the year which show that the EU works to address people's
concerns.
She
underlined the need to address violence against women and stressed that
"poverty will never be history unless we tackle climate change". She
also praised NGOs for their contribution to development projects and in
particular Latvian NGOs for having pushed for 2015 to become the
European Year for Development.

On 8 January the
LIBE Committee held an exchange of views regarding the letter of the
European Ombudsman on access to the second inspection report of Europol
Joint Supervisory Body (JSB) on the Terrorist Finance Tracking Programme
(TFTP). The European Ombudsman, Ms O´Reilly, as well as representatives
from Europol, the JSB and the European Commission took part in this
discussion with the LIBE Members.

An exchange of
views with the Commission on Creative Europe, replacing the former
MEDIA, MEDIA Mundus and Culture programmes, will take place at the next
CULT meeting on 20 January pm. Adopted at the end of 2013, this
programme runs from 2014 to 2020. This is now a good opportunity, at the
beginning of the second year of implementation, to take stock of the
current state of play.

An exchange of
views with the European Commission, represented by Director General Mr
Karl Falkenberg, on the review of six waste directives (Waste Framework,
Packaging & Packing Waste, Landfill, Batteries & Accumulators
Waste, End-of-life Vehicle, Waste Electric & Electronic Waste),
followed by a public hearing on the same topic will take place on
Thursday 22 January (10.00-12.30).
